Press communiqué: The United Nations Population Fund UNFPA Deputy Executive Director Ms. Anne-Birgitte Albrectsen

 

The United Nations Population Fund UNFPA Deputy Executive Director Ms. Anne-Birgitte Albrectsen reaffirmed the Fund’s support to the new Federal Government of Somalia during a meeting with Prime Minister Mr. Abdi Farah Shirdon and Speaker of Parliament Mr. Mohamed Osman Jawari in Mogadishu today, Thursday 11 October 2012.

The United Nations Population Fund is an international development agency that promotes the rights of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA helps countries ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.

Ms. Albrectsen met with Mr. Shirdon and Mr. Jawari where she listened to the prime minister expectations for the future state and discussed how best the UN will align its activities with the six pillars policy framework that was established by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud.

She offered the strong support of UNFPA for the reduction of maternal mortality, improved reproductive health service delivery and capacity building, for strengthening the health system in Somalia.

Ms. Albrectsen expressed UNFPA’s commitment to support the urgent update of population data for improved planning and governance. She finally commended the new Government’s strong emphasis on rule of law and protection of women’s rights.
